The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Uche Ekwunife (Iyom) on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 received the 21 LGA Women Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State in her home at Awka. The group was ably led by the State Woman Leader of the party, Lady Justina Nwafor.
The visit which was in commemoration of Senator Ekwunife’s 50th Birthday Anniversary, afforded the Women Leaders the opportunity to interact with the Senator and appreciate her for her giant strides in governance.
Speaking at the gathering, Lady Justina Nwafor described Senator Ekwunife as a woman who has redefined the position of women in politics through her antecedents and track records. She stated that Ekwunife’s performances leave no one in doubt of her desire to entrench good governance in Anambra State, which she is reflecting in the communities she currently represents in the Senate.
Lady Nwafor in further appreciation to the Senator stated that the Women of Anambra State are indeed excited over her ambition to serve the State as Governor. She noted that the party, as already communicated through many fora will provide a level playing ground for all Aspirants to ensure that whoever emerges as the party’s Candidate is someone who is sellable and has all it takes to win the election for the party and lead the State towards the path of infrastructural and economic revival.
In her speech, the Federal Lawmaker and frontline Governorship Aspirant for the 2021 Governorship election stated that even though the men play an important role in government, the time has come for women to be given an opportunity to utilize their natural managerial abilities at the apex of the executive arm of government. She noted that her antecedents and current strides in governance are testimonies to the fact that women can play a crucial role in government and equally have all it takes to occupy executive offices, including serving as Governors of States.
Speaking further, Ekwunife restated that she is not running because she is a woman rather her aspiration is based on the belief that her track records and experience as a Legislator put her in a better position to address the developmental needs of the State. She solicited for the support of the women as well as the men and promised to run an all inclusive government that will give both the male and the female gender a true sense of belonging.
The meeting ended with the Women Leaders cutting the 50th Birthday Anniversary Cake with Senator Ekwunife and celebrating her for being a bold face in the struggle for an increased participation of women in governance.
The Senator appreciated the women leaders in the spirit of the Season and expressed gratitude for their commitment to the progress of the party in the State. The Distinguished Senator was delighted to note that all the 21 PDP LGA Women Leaders were present at the occasion.
Also present to receive the Women Leaders were the former Commissioner for Women Affairs Anambra State, Lady Henrietta Agbata, the Former Chairman ASUBEB, Dr Rose Nwankwo, DG Iyom Fans Club, Chief Ifeanyi Onyesoh amongst others.
