–Urges women leaders to use their positions to advance the cause of women
The leading aspirant for the November 6 Anambra governorship election, Senator Uche Ekwunife has reemphasized the need for investment in women development, saying that women play a special role in the socio-economic development of any nation.
Ekwunife said this during a special business session and capacity building training she facilitated for women leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Awka. The training was part of the numerous empowerment programmes the Senator had organized for women in line with her commitment towards women empowerment and development.
Speaking at the programme which had in attendance the PDP State woman leader, Lady Justina Nwafor, local governments and wards women leaders, Ekwunife stated that women play a special role in the society and as such deserve to be constantly empowered with the requisite skills, tools and resources to prepare them for the challenges of the future. She described women empowerment as the most critical form of empowerment.
Ekwunife restated her resolve to use her position to enhance the place of women in the state, reaffirming the need to empower women to become ‘working housewives’, and significant financial contributors to the development of not just their immediate families but the society at large.
Speaking further, the Igbo-Ukwu born Senator urged the PDP women leaders to use their positions to advance the cause of women in their different wards and LGAs, emphasizing that the woman leader position was specially created to protect the interest of women in the party.
Relaying the excitement of the women, Lady Justina Nwafor thanked Ekwunife for being resolute in championing the cause of women within and outside the party. She commended her for always carrying the women along, saying that this is not the first time the women are witnessing such a gesture from Ekwunife.
The high point of the event was recorded as the grassroots friendly lawmaker officially flagged off the training which availed the South East Zonal Director, National Board For Technology Incubation (NBTI), Dr Mrs U.P Chukwu the opportunity of introducing the facilitators of the program who trained the women on local organic soap production followed by an expose on walnut value chain development in Nigeria.
The programme ended with the distribution of gas cookers and cylinders to some of the women who expressed appreciation to Ekwunife, describing her as a champion of women’s causes. They equally assured her of their support ahead of the upcoming election.
