2022 World Environment Day: Governor Soludo Asks Ndi Anambra To Report Emerging Erosion Sites, Calls For Collective Actions To Cleaner, Greener State

As Anambra State joins the rest of the world to commemorate the 2022 World Environment Day, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has called for transformative actions on a global scale to protect the human environment.

Governor Soludo made the call during a press briefing held to herald the event at the Jerome Udorji Secretariat, Awka.

World Environment Day, which became an annual event in 1973, is the biggest international day for the environment, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and is celebrated by millions of people across the world.

The day is celebrated on June 5 every year to raise awareness on the degrading environmental conditions and to encourage people globally to take positive environmental actions, to help create a better future.

According to the Governor Soludo, the day is meant to remind Ndi Anambra that the environment is the first priority of all citizens, and asked communities and markets to embark on practical actions for a cleaner, greener, planned and sustainable cities.

Professor Soludo who spoke through the Commissioner for Environment, Engineer Felix Odimegwu asked the people to quickly report any active erosion sites before they become serious issues and warned people against the habit of building on major service drains to avoid flooding.

He pointed out that any developmental projects by individuals or groups must henceforth obtain environmental impact approval, a move that will ensure that Ndi Anambra pay more attention to their environment.

The governor concluded by assuring the people that the celebration will be flagged off with massive planting of trees and public awareness symposium in Awka, and called on the citizenry to leverage on the opportunity offered by this year’s World Environment Day to increase their consciousness on environmental management practices, good sanitation and hygiene culture for the general wellbeing of all.

The 2022 World Environment Day has the theme “Only One Earth”, with the focus on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature”.
