Enugu State’s branch of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expelled former Governor Sullivan Chime, the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria Osita Okechukwu, and former Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly Eugene Odo, for allegedly engaging in anti-party activities during the 2023 general elections. The party also suspended former Senate President Senator Ken Nnamani and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, on similar grounds.
According to the State’s party Secretary, Robert Ngwu, the decision to expel and suspend the members was based on a recommendation made in the report of a disciplinary committee. The report was ratified by an enlarged State Executive Committee meeting.
The expelled and suspended members were accused of supporting candidates from other political parties during the general elections. This action was viewed as being against the interest of the APC, which is committed to promoting its candidates and values.
The party’s disciplinary action sends a clear message that it will not tolerate any form of anti-party activities, regardless of the member’s position or status. By taking such action, the APC is setting an example that members who do not abide by the party’s directives will face consequences.
The expulsion of former Governor Sullivan Chime, a prominent figure in the APC, demonstrates the party’s commitment to upholding its values, even at the expense of losing influential members. The suspension of Senator Ken Nnamani and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, shows that no member is above the law, and all members must be held accountable for their actions.
The decision to expel and suspend members may have significant implications for the APC in Enugu State. The party may face challenges in filling the void left by the expelled and suspended members, particularly during the next election cycle.
Overall, the APC Enugu State branch’s decision to expel and suspend members for anti-party activities is a clear indication of the party’s commitment to maintaining its values and principles. It remains to be seen how the party will address the fallout from these disciplinary actions and move forward to build a stronger, more united party.
