The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has stated that it is not responsible for monitoring the content of social media networks, despite complaints from various stakeholders.
The statement came during a recent visit by the National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN), who sought the commission’s intervention on the “worrisome and misleading content” of social media platforms.
The NCSCN urged the NCC to partner with them to help curb the spread of fake news and incendiary content. However, the Director of Public Affairs of the Commission, Mr Reuben Muoka, explained that the Commission’s mandate does not extend to controlling the content of such media platforms. The NCC’s main role is to facilitate the deployment of telecoms infrastructure that provides different types of telecommunication services, improve broadband, ensure fair competition, and protect telecoms consumers.
In response to the NCSCN’s request, Muoka stated that the Commission promotes collaboration and partnerships with different stakeholders, including NCSCN, in creating awareness and promoting access to different categories of consumers in the country.
