A Nigerian lawyer has criticised a proposed life pension bill for former governors and deputy governors in Benue State, claiming it is “outrageous, ridiculous and economy-crippling”.
The bill was presented to the Benue State House of Assembly by Governor Samuel Ortom. The lawyer, Barr. Terhemen Oscar Aorabee-Gagajav, detailed provisions including the payment of a monthly stipend equivalent to the salary of a sitting governor or deputy governor, four new cars every four years, and annual vacations abroad. All entitlements would be for life and paid for by the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the state.
Aorabee-Gagajav claimed the bill was a pension scam and could impoverish workers and citizens of the state.
