Deputy National Chairman (South) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Senator Dr. Ugochukwu Uba, has condemned in the strongest terms the recent attack on Yelewata village in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, where over 200 lives were reportedly lost in what he described as a “senseless killing.”

In a solemn press statement released on Wednesday, Senator Uba expressed deep sorrow over the growing state of insecurity in Nigeria and called on the Federal Government to immediately take decisive action to halt what he said is a descent into chaos.

He also cited the 1999 Constitution (as amended), specifically Chapter 2, Section 14, Subsection 2(a & b), which makes it the primary responsibility of the government to ensure the security and welfare of the people.

PRESS STATEMENT BY:

THE SENSELESS KILLINGS IN BENUE STATE

I am deeply saddened and outraged by the recent attack in Yelewata village in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, which claimed the lives of over 200 innocent citizens. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.

I condemn in the strongest possible terms the brutality and disregard for human life displayed by the perpetrators of this heinous act. It is imperative that the government put a stop to the carnage and massacre occurring with impunity in our country every day.

I call on the Federal Government to deploy adequate security personnel to ensure the security of lives and property of Nigerians, as provided in Chapter 2, Section 14, Subsection 2(a & b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The ceaseless and continuous murder of innocent and helpless citizens is shameful and unacceptable.

The government should conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to unravel the perpetrators of such senseless killings, bring the perpetrators to justice, and stop this despicable carnage once and for all.

The government should provide support and compensation to the families of the victims. It must also as a matter of urgency stop the country’s gradual degeneration into a state of anarchy and chaos. The Federal Government must do all in its power to prevent this descent into a Hobbesian state, where life is short, brutish, and nasty.

I stand in solidarity with the people of Benue State and the entire enraged nation during this time of grief. I urge everyone to remain calm and unite in calling on the Federal Government to rise and defend Nigerians from pervasive insecurity and to ensure that justice is served in Yelewata village and other parts of Nigeria where the lives and properties of our citizens are wasted daily, so that the dead will not have died in vain.

May God comfort the families of the victims and grant rest to the departed souls.

Sen. Dr. Ugochukwu Uba
Deputy National Chairman, South
