Engr. Ben Okongwu (Ugbana Abagana) President General, Abagana Welfare Union (AWU)

The President General of the Abagana Welfare Union (AWU), Engr. Ben Okongwu, has addressed the recent wave of violence in Abagana, which has been trending online and tarnishing the community’s image. In a statement released on January 27, 2025, Engr. Okongwu condemned all forms of violence and commended the security agencies; especially the police for their efforts to apprehend the suspects and also call on the community to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies as they investigate these incidents.

Below is his official statement:

“Official Statement by the President General, Abagana Welfare Union (AWU)

The Abagana Welfare Union (AWU) strongly condemns all forms of violence, particularly acts as heinous as murder. The recent tragic and senseless killings in our community, including the death of Mrs. Chioma Nwaka and the horrifying burning of a 74-year-old woman in a wheelchair, are deeply troubling and unacceptable.

While we acknowledge that all suspects are innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law, we deplore all acts of violence in the strongest possible terms. These actions rob families of their loved ones, disrupt the peace in our community, and tarnish the values we hold dear.

We commend the swift action taken by the Anambra State Police in apprehending the suspects and urge them to ensure that justice is served promptly and fairly. We also call on the community to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies as they investigate these incidents.

As a community, we must come together to foster a culture of peace, respect for human life, and adherence to the law. Violence has no place in Abagana, and we must work collectively to prevent such incidents from happening again.

Our prayers and heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the victims, and we stand with them in this time of unimaginable grief. Let us remain united as we work towards healing and rebuilding trust within our community.

Signed,

Engr. Ben Okongwu (Ugbana Abagana)

President General, Abagana Welfare Union (AWU)”
