The Anambra State Government, in collaboration with the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), has commenced a significant project to construct internal roads within the Uwakwe Ukagbe Building Materials Market (Building Materials Umuokpu) in Awka.
Empowered by the law, ACTDA is tasked with the holistic and comprehensive management and development of activities within the capital territory. Recently, the Authority successfully restored power supply to the market after months of blackout.
The MD/CEO of ACTDA, Mr. Ossy Onuko, highlighted the main objective of this initiative, stating that the remodeling of roads and restoration of electricity was aimed at creating an enabling environment for building materials traders to thrive. He emphasized that this move is aligned with the Governor’s directive to relocate all building materials traders to the designated market for such trade in the capital city.
“We cannot achieve the capital city of our dreams with the current disorganization. To improve the system, we must put an end to the indiscriminate siting of building materials shops across the town. Once the Umuokpu market is made conducive, all building material traders in the city will be relocated here,” Mr. Onuko explained.
Expressing their support, Mr. Emmanuel Umenweke, a trader in the market, commended Governor Professor Charles Soludo and the ACTDA management for embarking on this project. He expressed confidence that upon completion, the roads will address issues of dust and untidy environment in the market, providing a better trading experience for all.
