Anambra Guber: How INEC officials compromised Anambra election results – Report

Published:

INEC has officially declared Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo of APGA as the winner of the November 6 Anambra state governorship election but we shall condemn the role of INEC in the outcome of this election.

INEC acted in a suspicious manner. It is unfortunate that INEC could not protect their own. In 2019, a returning officer came out to announce that he was forced under gun point to announce ex gov Rochas Okorocha as the winner of the Imo west senatorial election. INEC rose to the occasion, refused to accept the result and withheld the certificate of return to Rochas Okorocha.

INEC said declaration and return of Okorocha were made under duress and that the commission would not give any certificate to any person who procured a return under duress.

In the just included Anambra election, the returning officer for Orumba north LGA, Dr. Michael Otu, stunned stakeholders at the Anambra State governorship election collation centre on Sunday when he denounced the result he signed. He said he did not believe in the result. He accused the electoral officer that was supposed to work with him of collaborating with APGA officials to scuttle the election results in the area.

Dr Otu said, “I signed a report I didn’t believe in. I signed it under duress. I was teargassed. I was locked in the toilet, until a policeman smuggled me out.

“I could not even go out to ease myself. They were monitoring me up and down. At a point, I saw that my life waS in danger, so, I have to sign the results they prepared.”

These were the words of the returning officer for Orumba north LGA but INEC went ahead to accept the result and declared APGA winner.

Dr Otu added that the TC chairperson of Orumba north came in with thugs and told him that if she doesn’t deliver Orumba north that she would be sacked by the APGA govt.

Apart from the situation at Ihiala LGA, there were other areas like Abatete, Ebenebe, Amanuke, Nzam etc were elections were cancelled and or not conducted due to failure of the INEC BVAS. But INEC announced a Supplementary election only in Ihiala and disenfranchised the voters of other areas where election did not hold on Saturday.

Yes Soludo was declared, but INEC conducted the worst election on Saturday especially as the BVAS failed in most places. The failure of the BVAS substantially affected the possible outcome of the election.
