In an exciting development, the Anambra State Football Association has been entrusted with the responsibility of organizing the highly anticipated HRH Igwe Kenneth Orizu III of Nnewi Diamond Football Competition. The maiden edition of this prestigious tournament is set to kick off on July 23.
As part of the selection process, six teams will be chosen, with two teams representing each of the three Senatorial Districts of the state. The Anambra State Football Association will carefully assess the teams to ensure a fair and competitive lineup.
On July 23, the FC Ifeanyi Ubah Stadium on Ozubulu Road in Nnewi will serve as the battleground for the playoffs, where the six teams will clash for a chance to secure a spot in the final. The two victorious teams from the playoffs will then face off in the final showdown scheduled to take place on July 25.
Ralph Nweke, the Acting Secretary of the Anambra State Football Association, provided insights into the selection process when approached for clarification. He confirmed that the teams are yet to be finalized but assured that a rigorous evaluation process is underway to determine the most deserving participants.
The visionary behind the Igwe Orizu Diamond Football Competition is Chief Donatus Agu-Ejidike, JP, a respected figure hailing from Nnewi and known as The Nigeria Pillar of Sports. Chief Ejidike shared the motivation behind organizing this tournament, expressing that it is an exceptional way to celebrate Igwe Orizu’s 60th anniversary on the throne.
“The Office of The Pillar of Sports in Nigeria, together with The Pillar of Sports himself, intends to utilize this tournament as part of the commemorative events honoring Igwe Orizu’s remarkable 60-year reign as Igwe Nnewi,” Chief Ejidike explained.
