Anambra State Ministry of Environment Awka Partners with UNIZIKS Theatre and Film Studies Students to Commemorate National Environmental Sanitation Day

The Department of Theatre and Film studies Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka (UNIZIK) celebrates National Environmental Sanitation Day With The Ministry of Emvironment Awka

The commemoration which took place in jerome udorji secretariat Awka had in attendance; students and lecturers from Unizik, directors, hod’s. staffs from the ministry of environment and friends of the environment

Dir. of Environmental health and pollution control Mrs Nwankwu who represented Mr Commissioner of Environment Engr Dr Felix Odimegwu at the event highlighted that National Environmental Sanitation Day (NESD) celebrated 28th of june every year in Nigeria is used to re-emphasize the essence of environmental sanitation in our homes and work places, being a fundamental requirement for our overall physical, social and mental well-being

“2023 NESD theme is: Promoting sustainable waste management for a healthy environment: stop open dumpimg, which the aim to develop and maintain a clean, safe and pleasant physical environment in all human settlement by stopping indiscriminate dumping of refuse”

“With the short film that the theatre and film studies students displayed here today i am quite confident and elated that this present generation is in tune with the happenings in our environment from waste management down to the negative effect of unmanaged waste, it is more fulfilling as i sit back and watch them teach me through drama what i should have been teaching them today” she added

“Truly His Excellency Mr Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo’s quest for a clean, green and sustainable environment have reached to all the Nooks and crannies in the state, our higher institution undergraduates have also join the trend of taking ownership of their environment, Anambra State is fully environmentall aware” she concluded

Dr Helen Ayamelum, one of the lecturers from the department of theatre and film studies present at the event stated that the stage play/film displayed today is a practical aspect of one of the courses in the university named “community theatre for development” which allows student to interact with the community, find out a pressing problem, dramatize it and seek for solution

“through our film/short play we aim to educate the community on the side effect of indiscriminate refuse disposal, environmental degradation/impact of most of the daily activities we engage in consciously and unconsciously” she concluded
