Anambra Women’s Affairs Commissioner Empowers Repatriated Beggar Caught in Delta

Anambra State Women and Social Welfare Commissioner, Hon Ify Obinabo, has cautioned a repatriated woman who was caught begging on the streets of Delta State, warning her to desist or face the law. Ogochukwu Nwabude, a 32-year-old mother of one, was sent back to Anambra by Delta state authorities for begging on the streets.

In her office in Awka, Obinabo criticized the woman’s behavior but also encouraged her to become an agent of change by engaging in a trade to support herself and her child. She then empowered Nwabude with a small amount of money to start a business of her choice. However, she warned her that if caught begging again, she would be taken to court.

Nwabude, who hails from Nnewi, claimed that she only begged for two weeks before being apprehended by Delta state officials and sent back to Anambra. While at the commissioner’s office, she promised not to engage in begging again and vowed to make good use of the empowerment.
