ANSG Seeks Urgent Federal Intervention for Oba Landslide Crisis

The Anambra State government has urgently appealed to the federal government for assistance in addressing the erosion menace that poses a significant threat to the lives and properties of its citizens at the Oba axis of the Onitsha-Owerri express road.

During an inspection of the extensive devastation caused by the gully erosion, a team comprising Anambra State Commissioner for Works, Engineer Ifeanyi Okoma, Environment counterpart Engineer Felix Odimegwu, Chief Staff to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Mr. Ernest Ezeajughi, Press Secretary Mr. Christian Aburime, Transition Committee Chairman for Idemmili South Council Area Mrs. Amaka Obi, and members of Oba Town union and traditional council highlighted the pressing need for federal intervention.

After the inspection, Commissioner Okoma informed journalists that a section of the road had been completely severed by the erosion, posing a risk of imminent collapse for several surrounding buildings. The Anambra State government has already taken measures to mitigate further damage, documenting the extent of the gully and forwarding the findings to the federal government for approval and action.

Commissioner Okoma passionately urged President Bola Tinubu to grant express approval to the state’s request, expressing gratitude to Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the swift response to the crisis and other emergencies.

Engineer Felix Odimegwu, the Commissioner for Environment, expressed regret that Anambra State has the highest number of erosion sites in the country due to its topography. He appealed to the federal government to urgently address the Oba landslide, emphasizing that the road is the only route connecting Imo, Abia, and other states to the Niger Bridge. The intervention is crucial for the safety and wellbeing of the people of Anambra and the Igbo community at large.

Mr. Ezeajughi, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, emphasized that such a massive erosion challenge requires federal government attention. He commended the Anambra State government for its prompt response, underscoring its commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of all Anambra residents. He expressed hope that the federal government would respond positively to the urgent request.

During their speeches, Mrs. Obi, the Transition Committee Chairman for Idemili South Council Area, and Sir Osita Ubadi, the President General of Oba, expressed gratitude to the Anambra State government for its swift response and intervention. They also appealed to the federal government to provide assistance, saving them from further hardship.
