APWEN Gets New Chairman

Engr Helen Ifeanyichukwu has been inaugurated as the third Chairman of the Association Of Professional Women Engineers Of Nigeria, Awka Chapter.

Association Of Professional Women Engineers Of Nigeria is a division of the Nigerian Society Of Engineers with the mission of increase awareness that engineering is a career for girls also, thereby improving numerical strength of female engineers and to encourage women to achieve professional excellence as engineers and leaders.

Engr Ifeanyichukwu was inaugurated in a ceremony which held in Awka with the theme “Engineering and Policing in our communities: using Indigenous Technologies and Strategies”,

Engr Ifeanyichukwu is also the Head Of Department, Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Engineering Technology, Federal Polytechnic Oko.

Addressing the participants, the President of the Association nationwide, Engr Dr Elizabeth Jumoke said the association came up to break the gender disparity by being an advocate for the advancement of female engineers in national and global technological development, noting that the theme of the inauguration is apt because for engineering to thrive in any society there must be enabling environment.

Delivering the keynote address anchored on the theme of the inauguration, the State Commissioner Of Police, Echeng Echeng represented by the District Police Officer, Central Police Station, CPS,Awka, Superintendent Leelea Vena-Chuks disclosed that they are doing all to reduce crime and criminality to the nearest minimum, stating that as Engineers, they work should cooperate with to ensure they safeguard communities in the state.

He, therefore, encouraged them to provide police with useful information of any sort to help her fight crime.

In her inaugural speech, the new Chairman, Engr Ifeanyichukwu noted that with the inaugural theme, it requires the active participation of all engineers, police and the general public, knowing that the profession cut across all spheres of life for the well being of mankind.

She further noted that they will engage professional development of members and promoting mentorship by creating a platform for women engineers to collaborate with women in other professional bodies.

The outgoing Chairman, Engr Nneka Ezeani during her valedictory speech, noted that her tenure achieved professional competence and advancement of members and other aspects in promoting the vision, mission and aim of the association as well as training of some students and others to promote and make the association known to people.

In a goodwill message, the Chairman, Academic Staff Union Of Polytechnics, Federal Polytechnic Oko, Sir Samuel Igbokwe expressed gladness for the elevation of one of their own, stating that with her capacity, the association will witness tremendous turn around wishing her success.

The programme witnessed presentation of awards to people who have done well in engineering profession and past members of executive of the association.
