A group of suspected armed robbers unleashed chaos at the Rivers State University in Port Harcourt, leaving a trail of stolen valuables and traumatized students. The incident occurred yesterday when the criminals brazenly invaded several hostels on the university campus. Among the distressing reports emerging from the attack, it has been revealed that two female students were sexually assaulted during the invasion.
Operating under the cover of darkness, the armed robbers, armed with guns and machetes, targeted Female Hostel D, where they carried out their operation with alarming impunity. The assailants managed to breach the security measures and reportedly assaulted two female students, further exacerbating the distressing situation.
Outraged by the recurring incidents of criminal attacks within their living quarters, female students embarked on a protest within the campus. Their demonstration drew attention to the lack of security measures that have failed to prevent such harrowing incidents from taking place.
Voicing their frustration, students lamented the university’s apparent failure to address the escalating insecurity on campus. One student, reflecting the collective sentiment, questioned the university’s response, stating, “The school security is telling us to wait, wait for what? If we are their daughters, will they allow this happen to them?”
Another student emphasized the possible involvement of insiders, asserting, “There is no way you will say these criminals came from inside the school, they came from outside. If you are coming from outside that late you have to bribe the school security N1000. They will take N1000, then they will allow you inside the school.”
Despite the presence of Mile 3 police station in close proximity to the university, the lack of immediate intervention has sparked further frustration and raised questions about the effectiveness of security measures.
Police personnel, led by the Chief Security Officer of the university, Chukuwma Ebere, intervened to address the agitated students. Ebere assured the students that their concerns would be addressed, offering a semblance of hope amid the tumultuous situation.
In response to the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that the situation had been brought under control. She stated, “The Rivers State Police Command, having received a report of an armed robbery attack at the Rivers State University female hostel, the CP directed the DC Operations, Area Commander, Port Harcourt, and the DPO Nkpolu to provide adequate security on the campus.”
Expressing concern over the rising incidents of insecurity, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police urged students, parents, and school authorities to utilize the Police Control Room numbers to report any suspicious activities, with the aim of enhancing vigilance and safeguarding the campus community.
