The leading governorship aspirant under the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Uche Ekwunife on March 26, 2021, joined a delegation of the National Assembly Committee on Aviation to tour the ongoing Anambra International Cargo Airport, Umueri. The delegation led by the Senate Committee Chairman on Aviation, Senator Smart Adeyemi was in the state for an oversight visit to ascertain the level and quality of work done at the site.
Addressing newsmen, Ekwunife noted that aviation is a critical driver of economic growth. She said that irrespective of political divide she was delighted to see the impressive work and the determination of the state government to complete the project within the shortest possible time.
Speaking further, the Igbo-Ukwu born senator said that if given the mandate to become the next governor of Anambra State, she will consolidate and improve upon the achievements recorded.
In his remarks, Chairman Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Smart Adeyemi described Anambra as the commercial centre of South East, saying that aviation is key to the economic development of any country. He advised the government of Anambra state to set up a supervisory body that will monitor the quality of work done by the contractor.
In his speech, Chairman House Committee on Aviation, Hon. Nnolim Nnaji re-echoed the words of Senator Adeyemi. He commended the state government for the project and charged them to ensure the completion of the airport as promised.
Welcoming the delegation from National Assembly, Governor Willie Obiano who was in company of his wife, Chief (Mrs) Ebele Obiano said the airport is a landmark for Anambra, South East and Nigeria. Obiano noted that Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Captian Musa Nuhu was at the site some days ago for inspection. He took the delegation round the facilities at the airport and assured the airport will be ready by April.
Dignitaries present were Senator Ifeanyi Ubah (Senator Representing Anambra South), Hon. Chinedu Obigwe (Member representing Anambra East and West Federal Constituency), Anambra state Commissioner for Works, Engr. Marcel Ifejiofor, His Lordship, Rt. Rev. B. L. Onuagha (Bishop of Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Onitsha), Traditional Rulers, LGA Transition chairmen amongst others.
