Awka Launches Successful Plastic Waste Pick Up Challenge

The Plastic Waste Pick Up Challenge in Awka, organized by the Anambra State Ministry of Environment, ASWAMA, ASATU, ASWARA, and other stakeholders, has begun its collation and sorting phase. Yesterday, on July 29, 2023, teams gathered plastic waste from participants of the “All Anambra plastic waste pick up” initiative.

The Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Dr. Felix Odimegwu, reiterated the purpose of the program, aiming to rid the state of plastic waste and achieve Governor Soludo’s vision of a clean, green, and sustainable environment.

Dr. Odimegwu stated, “The team visited various communities, recording and weighing the cumulative amount of plastic waste collected. We’ve coordinated with recycling off-takers who exchange the plastics for instant cash rewards, benefitting the participating communities and citizens.”

Each drop point’s plastic waste will be recorded in a log book, and communities will be categorized into urban, semi-urban, and rural areas. The community with the highest plastic waste collection will receive well-deserved rewards.

The “Anambra all plastic Pick Up Challenge” launched on June 8, 2023, with a call for communities and individuals to participate, collect plastic wastes from their environment, and get rewarded for their efforts.
