Catholic Diocese Of Awka through Justice Development and Pecace Commission,JDPC has provided relief materials to flood victims in Awba-Ofemili, Ugbene and Ugbenu, all in Awka North Council Area.
The communities are part of the many communities in Anambra State who are submerged by heavy flooding with residents losing farm produce, houses and livestock.
With the communities being part of the Catholic Diocese of Awka, the leadership of the Diocese thought of wise to visit the victims and provide them with relief materials to cushion the effects of the disaster on them.
The items presented were bags of rice, beans, melon, dikanut (ogbono), grinded cassava floor, maize, and crayfish.
Others include tubers of yam, cartons of noodles, tin tomatoes,bags of onions, flout powder, cartons of biscuits, cartoons of vegetable oil, salt, tissue papers and many other toiletries.
Handing over the items to the Parish Priest, Saint Paul’s Catholic Church, Awba-Ofemili, the Bishop, Catholic Diocese Of Awka, Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor said they came to show love, concern and care to them as their flock and expressed gladness that no life was lost in the area telling them that there is hope ahead.
Bishop Ezeokafor lamented the ugly inability of the federal government to prevent the flood.
He asked the victims to use the flood as a reminder on the need to elect leaders that will proffer permanent solution to the flood disaster facing the country.
Earlier in his speech, the Diocesan Chancellor, Very Reverend Father Charles Ndubisi extolled the efforts of the Bishop in reaching out to the flood victims saying that they it is practical christianity at play.
Responding on behalf of the parish pastoral council and Awba-Ofemili Catholic Community, the Parish Priest, Saint Paul’s Catholic Parish, Awba-Ofemili, Reverend Father Joseph Nwilo said he was elated and overwhelmed by the visit which he said will add to the lives of the victims stating they’ll continue to uphold catholic doctrine and adhere to the teachings of the church and words of Christ.
Among those in the bishop’s entourage were the Director of JDPC, Reverend Father Levi Ukor, the board Chairman, Sir Oggor Ezeonu, the Diocesan PRO, Sir Abuchi Onwumelu and many other priests.
