The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has accepted an apology from FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria Plc, makers of Peak Milk, after the company issued a controversial social media advertorial on Good Friday.
CAN President, Daniel Okoh had condemned the advert, describing it as “insensitive, offensive, and totally unacceptable”. The advertisement in question featured a dented tin of Peak Milk with a nail dripping milk lying beside it, captioned: “Bruised and Pierced for us. #GoodFriday”.
CAN had threatened serious sanctions against the company, including a boycott of their products by Christians. However, on Tuesday, the Executive Director of FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria Plc (Corporate Affairs), Ore Famurewa, expressed remorse in a letter to the CAN President. Famurewa stated that the company was committed to “maintaining the respect of all religious laws, tenets and guidelines” and pledged to prevent a reoccurrence of such in the future.
In response, CAN issued a statement, signed by General Secretary Joseph Daramola, accepting the apology and urging other organizations to be cautious when placing advertisements. The statement noted that the association had no intention of promoting hatred or disharmony, but would continue to work towards peaceful coexistence among religious groups in Nigeria.
