The Catholic Bishop of Osogbo Diocese, Rev. John Oyejola, has called on Nigerians to reject divisive speeches that could jeopardize the stability of the country.
During his homily on Sunday, Bishop Oyejola urged politicians and religious leaders to respect the people’s choice and avoid divisive rhetoric.
The cleric noted that amidst the difficulties, pain, tension, frustration, and fear in Nigeria, citizens should not despair. He drew inspiration from the resurrection of Jesus, stating that when Jesus’ disciples were discouraged and lived in fear, their hope was restored when he rose from the dead.
Bishop Oyejola emphasized that the resurrection should lift Nigerians from the darkness of despair and hopelessness. He added that the occasion should serve as an opportunity for citizens to recommit themselves to the ideals of their calling as children of God, working for unity, progress, and love.
“I invite our political leaders to respect the rights and choice of the people. Be truthful in their dealings, faithful to their promises, and work for the unity of this country. Our religious and political elites should shun divisive rhetoric and adverse language that can throw the country into more confusion,” he said.
Bishop Oyejola emphasized that on the cross where Jesus died, righteousness, justice, mercy, and love met, and citizens should work towards upholding these ideals.
