The Anambra State Branch of the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) has issued a heartfelt appeal to Professor Charles Soludo, calling for a comprehensive overhaul and reinforcement of the state’s security framework. The primary aim of this plea is to enhance the safety and protection of the region.
A press release jointly endorsed by Evangelist Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme, Chairman of CLO Anambra State, and Comrade Chidi Mbah, Secretary, bears the title “Let Us Secure Our State.” This statement coincides with the commemoration of the 32nd anniversary of the creation of Anambra State, which was established by military president Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida on August 27th, 1991.
One of the chief concerns raised by the CLO and the citizens of Anambra revolves around the prevalent insecurity that has led many residents to opt for more secure urban areas even for significant life events like burials and traditional marriages.
The press statement emphasized that security is a shared responsibility between both the government and its citizens. It called for a collective effort in safeguarding the state, its people, and their property. The CLO urged individuals to report any suspicious activities to ensure the security of the state.
The CLO also applauded former governors for their contributions to Anambra’s development. The statement highlighted the positive impact of figures like Ezeife, Ngige, and Obi in different areas of the state’s growth.
The appeal to Professor Charles Soludo, the incumbent governor, focused on key areas of concern. These included the need for improved security, the elimination of illegal revenue collection practices, eradication of uncivil task forces and touts, and a halt to multiple taxations. The release also called for the governor to prevent revenue agents from levying tolls on small-scale traders, artisans, and workers.
In addition, the CLO requested that the governor’s commissioners and political appointees engage with the citizens and promptly address their concerns. It also urged the governor to take steps towards democratizing the local government system, citing Anambra State’s limited local government elections since the inception of the current democratic dispensation.
The CLO applauded certain officials for their dedication and humility in addressing citizens’ complaints. It singled out Commissioner for Petroleum and Minerals Resources Barr. Anthony Ifeanya, Dr. Christian Mmadubuko, and CSP Christian Aburime for their commendable efforts.
As Anambra State continues its journey, the plea remains for strengthened security measures and comprehensive efforts to foster growth and well-being throughout the region.
