Concerned Anglican Diocesan Women in Awka Raise Alarm Over Escalating Violence Against Women

The women of the Anglican Diocese of Awka have expressed their concern over the increased violence against women and called on both state and non-state actors to rise to the challenge and see that perpetrators are brought to book.

This was contained in a fifteen-point communique released after the 37th Women’s Conference and Second Women’s Guild Conference of the Diocese which held at St Stephen’s Anglican Church, Ifitedunu, Dunukofia Local Government Area between 22nd and 25th June, 2023.

The communique was signed by the President, Mother’s Union, Women’s Guild, Young Wives Association and Girls Guild of the Diocese, Mrs Martha Ibezim and the Chairman, Communique Unit, Magistrate Chisom Okafor.

They asked women to speak up and speak out against every form of physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, psychological, economic, and domestic violence or abuse and called for the full enforcement of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law 2017 to ensure that deserving punishment are meted out on perpetrators of such crimes.

The women also expressed worries over the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) due to early exposure to sexual activities among young people, advising women to, in line with the theme of the conference, “You will eat the fruit of your labour” from Psalm 128:2, ensure they conduct regular tests and prioritize their health and overall well being.

On the state of the nation, The conference called on the Judiciary to ensure that justice is not only done but manifestly seen to be done in all the petitions brought before it following the 2023 general elections even as it congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his vice, Kashim Shettima on their inauguration, enjoining them to institutionalize good and all-inclusive governance in Nigeria.

The conference also commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his deputy Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim on their sound economic policies in Anambra State which they believe will maximize the state’s potential to reach holistic development and assured then of their continued prayer.

They, however, asked the Governor to conduct adequate screening of those who represent the government in the enforcement of tax and revenue collection to avoid the possibility of thugs hijacking the process and increasing the sufferings and hardships facing the people.
