Delta State Government Denies Deporting Anambra Woman Begging for Alms

The Delta State Government has denied reports that it deported a 32-year-old woman from Anambra State who was begging for alms and causing nuisances in Asaba. The woman, identified as Ogochukwu Nwabude, was with a baby and had been begging for two weeks at Inter Bau Roundabout in the capital city.

In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Olisa Ifeajika, he said that officials of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development conducted a check on her and found that she was stable and of sound mind but needed financial help. The ministry gave her some assistance and returned her to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in Anambra for necessary support.

According to Ifeajika, this measure was routine and often transpired among states in the country and the Federal Capital Territory. Anambra State Government was grateful to its Delta counterpart for the effort and promptly began the process of assistance to the woman.

Ifeajika clarified that the Delta State Government did not deport the woman but acted in good faith and within the ambits of regulations. Other states in the country had returned some of their citizens to Delta State at different times, and it was a normal routine that should not be politicized.

“What Delta State Government did was the routine procedure in rehabilitating persons of that nature, and it is the standard practice among states in the country. We provided her with some assistance and returned her to her state of origin to ensure that she is properly reintegrated into society,” he stated.

The statement was made in response to insinuations in some quarters that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa or the Delta State Government deported the woman. The Delta State Government acted in good faith and within the ambits of regulations, which the Anambra State Government acknowledged with gratitude.
