Do Ebonyi State need an Airport of that magnitude?

By Obi Trice Emeka

My opposition to trophy projects such as the craze for airports in most states is known. Statistics from FAAN has shown that 90% of these airports are in debt. The last time i flew through the Sam Mbakwe Airport, the Airport was an eyesore and areas surrounding the airport had no significant benefit from the airport which is more than 30 years old and as i was told receive about 10 flights daily.

Governance is all about making wise economic choices with scarce resources amidst an unending want.

Will the funds used for building this gigantic airport not find better alternative usage in primary healthcare centres and basic education in rural villages in Ebonyi?

Is there any commercial or any other activities that is capable to influence high volume of air traffic to Ebonyi state to warrant making this choice over other alternatives?

Personally, i am of the opinion that commercial activities should precede the need for an airport; that there must be a factor influencing air traffic volume to a place before an airport can be built, if not, the airport will not be able to fund its own maintenance.

An airstrip is a better alternative in locations with low air traffic rather than wasting huge funds building an Airport.
