In an effort to address the challenges caused by erosion in Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Uche Ekwunife (Iyom) has facilitated the utilization of locally sourced agro-based waste materials to tackle erosion menace in the Senatorial District.
The research which was developed by the Geo Technical Engineering Team of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) was designed to utilize agro-based waste materials for road stabilization and soil strengthening.
Ekwunife who had taken several steps towards tackling the erosion menace in the State has once again commenced a move that will ensure de-escalation of the erosion challenges bedeviling communities.
Speaking during an implementation of the road research work, the leader of the team, Engr Godwin Yisa stated that after series of successful laboratory tests and implementation in some soil samples, it was observed that the agro-based materials forestall soil degradation.
Engr Yisa noted that in an era where cement which is the conventional material for road stabilization has become expensive, the research development which has already produced positive results in other areas offers an eco friendly and cost effective approach to erosion management.
He appreciated the Senator for taking the bold step of offering her constituency the opportunity of benefiting from the project.
Recall that few months after Senator Ekwunife was sworn-in to represent Anambra Central, she moved a motion of urgent national importance on the devastating storm in some communities in Anambra State which she noted had aggravated the erosion challenges in the areas.
Her effort in the 8th Senate which saw her lead a high powered Senate delegation to the then Nkpor flyover erosion site and other erosion sites in Agulu, Nanka, Oko and several other communities gives credence to her quest to address the perennial challenge faced by many communities in Anambra State.
