Falana says Nigeria has a history of election petitions that didn’t favour applicants

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has commented on the 2023 Nigerian presidential election, stating that the country has the highest number of pre-election cases and election petitions in the world.

Falana expressed concern that Nigeria’s judiciary remains involved in its elections and suggested that more electoral reform could reduce the need for such involvement.

He also criticized the failure of successive governments to implement recommendations made by the Justice Uwais Electoral Reform Panel.

Four presidential candidates recently submitted separate petitions to the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja seeking to nullify the declaration of Bola Tinubu as the winner of the February 25 presidential poll.

Falana said that Nigeria has had similar cases before that did not favour the applicants and that much will depend on the evidence provided by the petitioners.
