Fashola: Nigerian Constitution Allows Dual Citizenship, Does Not Disqualify Presidential Candidates

The Minister for Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has stated that the Nigerian constitution allows citizens to have dual citizenship and does not disqualify presidential candidates on that basis.

This comes amid allegations that the ‘president-elect,’ Bola Tinubu, holds a Guinean passport, which could impact his eligibility to hold the presidency.

However, Fashola dismissed the relevance of Tinubu’s citizenship to the election results and pointed out that the Nigerian constitution allows dual citizenship.

He also clarified that the constitution disqualifies those who have voluntarily acquired the citizenship of another country, but having dual citizenship is not a barrier to holding public office.
