FCT Minister Nyesome Wike Dismisses Defection Speculations, Focuses on Delivering Promised Agenda

Nyesome Wike, the recently appointed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has quashed rumors of his potential defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He affirmed that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) permitted him to accept the ministerial appointment extended by President Bola Tinubu.

Wike, the solitary member of the opposition party within President Tinubu’s cabinet, has expressed his dedication to delivering the dividends of democracy and restoring the FCT to its former glory.

In his inaugural media briefing, Minister Wike outlined a comprehensive 10-point agenda, prioritizing key concerns such as security, urban cleanliness, preservation of the Abuja Master Plan, infrastructure development, revitalization of green spaces, eradication of shanties, revenue leakages mitigation, ground rent collection, and other deliverables.

Addressing inquiries about the party flag he would display in his office, Minister Wike stated that FCT residents should concentrate on pressing issues demanding immediate attention, rather than the political symbolism of a flag. He underscored his commitment to bringing the FCT back to the visionary aspirations of its founding figures.

He asserted, “I will fly the Nigerian flag and ensure the FCT returns to the dreams of the founding fathers. We will bring FCT back to where it ought to be. So many people have complained that this is not the FCT of the founding fathers. We must tackle the issue of security. FCT should be where people come for holidays.”

Minister Wike clarified that when President Tinubu extended the ministerial appointment, he corresponded with PDP National Chairman Umar Damagun, the South-South zonal chairman of the party, and the Rivers State chairman. All responded affirmatively, granting their approval for the appointment.
