Federal Government Approves Significant Increase in School Fees for Federal Unity Colleges

In a recent directive, the Federal Government has given the green light for a substantial hike in school fees for all Federal Government Colleges (FGCs), commonly known as federal unity colleges. The fees have been raised from ₦45,000 to ₦100,000 per term, affecting new students across the country. The directive, dated May 25, 2023, and issued by the Office of the Director of Senior Secondary Education Department of the Federal Ministry of Education, bears reference number ADF/120/DSSE/I. The decision comes despite the House of Representatives’ resolution urging the government to halt fee increases in public schools.

In the midst of the Federal Government’s approval to raise school fees for all Federal Government Colleges (FGCs) to ₦100,000 per term from the previous ₦45,000, the House of Representatives has passed a resolution demanding a reversal of the fee increment in federal government-owned secondary schools. The resolution, following a motion presented by lawmakers, seeks to address concerns raised by students and parents over the financial burden imposed by the fee hike.
