The Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was reportedly delayed and questioned by immigration officials in London, United Kingdom, over a case of “duplicate identity.” According to Prof Chinyere Okunna, one of Obi’s former aides, the ordeal happened last Friday when Obi’s British Airways flight landed in Heathrow Airport.
Okunna said that Obi, who had lived honorably in the UK for a long time, was detained for hours and handed a detention note after being stopped and questioned by immigration officials. The former aide added that the incident was meant to hound and chase Obi out of Nigeria.
In a post on Wednesday morning, Okunna said that Obi told her about his ordeal in private and expressed pain about the situation. She revealed that in the face of protests by some Nigerians, the immigration officials revealed that someone was impersonating Obi in the country.
“This revelation has definitely set off alarm bells. For people who are knowledgeable about such matters, this is a very dangerous development because the implication is that someone is impersonating Peter Obi,” Okunna said.
“And that someone could implicate Obi in all manner of dubious and even criminal activities, and rope him into any number of offenses; he could get Obi framed for one criminal act or another. The frightening scenario of what can happen is unimaginable.”
The news of Obi’s ordeal has caused a stir among Nigerians, with many expressing concern about the safety of the former Anambra State governor.
