Hope for Nigeria BY Madukwe Chigozie Joel

The song” We’ve been fooling around for so long… we’ve been sitting down for so long ” written by the popular Nigerian rainmaker, Majek Fashek resonates with the present Nigerian youth.

Nigeria is one of the few countries in the world where the government has little or no regard for the people. Nigeria remains a country where the people in their majority fail to understand the kind of power they wield. A country where the elected, once in the seat of power have never given a hoot about the citizens, they never execute people-oriented projects or policies that would strengthen the economy of Nigeria.

Nigerians for over 50 years developed thick skins in a progressively declining economy, an economy where the citizens have gone about their lives without caring or showing concern if there exists a government. The more deplorable and harsher their economic situations get, the more elastic they get only to be able to adjust and readjust to any situation. What are these people yearning for from the government? Honestly believe me if I tell you they are not asking for employment or social amenities with new technological upgrades because the boat has sailed for a long time. People in this country have resorted to fending for themselves without depending on the Nigerian government, they have gotten accustomed to self-reliance, and the government has taken them for granted. What they deeply want is security, to freely go about their businesses, as the lack of it would only make evidence of the failure of government in the life of the common people.

As the famous saying goes that ” Much of everything is bad” The leaders of this great country both past and present have ignored the masses and their cries for good governance for so long and the people for a long time have equally failed to remind these leaders who the country truly belongs to.

The Nigeria of today exhumes hope, as the people have come to a sudden realization of their social responsibilities and their contribution to the effective running of public offices.

The EndSas protest that has crystalized into political awareness among the Nigerian youth is the beginning of a new era in our great country. That a few devoted and concerned youth could peacefully voice out their pains and protest openly, and consequently, the government of the day reacted positively to their cries and demand, is a sign of hope that this country Nigeria could be salvaged. The recent surge and preparedness by the younger generation to actively participate in the forthcoming general election in 2023, goes a long way to show how aware they are today. Aware that having the wrong leaders at the helm of affairs in the country by extension retards both individual and collective development.

This consciousness among the youth that they have a say in who governs them should be encouraged by the government. The government should play a major role in maintaining this momentum by ensuring a credible election where the voices of the people would be a reflection on the ballot boxes. This would renew a level of confidence between the government and the people, this would kindle the spirit of patriotism and above all make the political and public office holders accountable to the people. At this point, anything short of the will of the people will degenerate into civil disobedience and unrest.

This is an open call to all that wish for the survival of our country Nigeria, to henceforth unite in all matters that affect us, I call on the men, the women, the old, and the youth, to always put their foot on the ground to fight for this country. If we all could join forces on a greater magnitude, we could have a say in our elections and their outcome. we could change lots of government policies that are anti-unity and progress. we could hold the public servants accountable while in and out of office.

Together we would make a difference! together we would make Nigeria great!!!
