In The News That Matter…

By Pat Uchendu

Of recent, Anambra State has been running fat in the news by actions of those indigenous to her, in politics and sundry, but sadly lean from Agu Awka.

Gov Willie Obiano’s tenure ends in a little over a year, on March 17, 2022. That is a short rough course of decent in practical terms for a government that would have served for eight years. This remaining term is even cut very short for him as campaigns would soon grow wings for the next occupant of Agu Awka. Whether anyone wants to accept it or not, placed on a scale of dividends of democracy, this government will soon enter panic period and will scratch to have tangible achievements to tag over. Whether they will have enough to persuade ndi Anambra that APGA deserves continuity beyond the handover date will be open to debate as electioneering garners momentum.

While approaching those hot debating moments, what people currently see are efforts by some NASS members doing infrastructural developments. But when the NASS members stand, one person stands out tall and robust with very key and enviable projects – built roads, youths empowerment, deep insights and developing sites in industrialisation, deliberate commercial road map and far-reaching healthcare provisions. He is Engr Chris Emeka Azubogu, recently crowned IfeanyiChukwu Nnewi, a title loaded on all sides. His vision for Anambra State is a study in socio-economic progress. Now let’s take a few pointers.

When in 2019, the popular 100-foot road in Nnewi collapsed over massive erosion gulley, Azubogu did not only raise the issue on the floor of the National Assembly which got funding approval and later got fixed as captured in ecological ledger, he reeled out the many environmental challenged sites in similar perilous state in Anambra State. But hear him after his recent visit to Nkpor, on one of his numerous efforts to evaluate the challenges ahead and galvanise solutions:

“We have to expand Infrastructure to accommodate growing population in an estimated land area of 4,865 Sq km of Anambra State, which puts the state as the second smallest state in terms of landmass, sadly with about 250 active erosion sites.”

This can only be a statement from someone who is not only concerned, but also prepared to serve. He plans ahead, he thinks the future too. And the only way to handle the future is to confront it today.
