The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is playing host to a team from the National Electoral Commission, NEC of Liberia in Abuja.
The visiting team led by the Chairperson of the Commission, Davidetta Lansanah, are on a study tour on biometric registration of voters.
Addressing the guests, the Chairman Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, said that countries are increasingly moving away from the manual processes by deploying more technology to further guarantee electoral credibility hence the Commission is convinced that the use of appropriate technology is one of the best guarantees for the transparency and credibility of the Electoral process.
He commended the Liberian team for the bold steps taken to move away from the manual register and toe the line of biometric voter registration as well as the decision to understudy Nigeria in that regards and promised to share the Commission’s success story to enable them make an informed decision.
Professor Yakubu, further assured the guests that they will continue to strengthen the long standing partnership with Liberia in the spirit of peer support which actually informed the Commission ‘s decision to introduce biometric registration of voters.
The leader of the team who is the Chairperson of the National Electoral Commission, NEC, of Liberia, Madam Davidetta Lansanah, said that they hope the lessons learnt during the visit will assist them make informed decisions on the adaptation processes just as she asked for assistance in the biometric voter registration owing to its costs and technicality.
Earlier in a welcome remarks, a national Commissioner, Adekunle Ogunmola, said apart from being able to conduct elections in the COVID-19 period, the Commission had been able to increase voter access to polling units.
