Man in Delta State Suffers Severe Machete Injury in Clash with Herdsmen on Farmland

In an unfortunate incident that highlights the ongoing tensions between farmers and herders, a 50-year-old generator repairer and subsistence farmer, Mr. Festus Unah, found himself at the receiving end of a brutal attack. The incident occurred on August 4, 2023, when Mr. Unah and his wife visited their cassava farm along Amorji Road, Obetim-Uno, Ndokwa West Local Government Area, Delta State.

Their initial goal was to clear the farm of weeds that had started to grow, but the situation escalated when they encountered two herdsmen grazing their cattle on the cassava crops. A disagreement ensued, and one of the herdsmen attacked Mr. Unah with a machete, inflicting a deep cut on his neck. Following the altercation, Mr. Unah was rushed to the General Hospital in Kwale for medical treatment.

Residents of the community have been expressing their concern about the destructive activities of herdsmen in the area. They claim that over 300 farmlands have been destroyed due to these activities in recent months.

Narrating the incident, Mr. Unah’s wife, Patricia, revealed that her husband had confronted the herdsmen and requested them to remove their cattle from the farm. The situation quickly turned hostile, and in a shocking turn of events, one of the herdsmen attacked her husband with a cutlass, causing a severe injury to his neck.

Despite being responsive to treatment, Mr. Unah is struggling to eat due to the extent of his injuries. He is currently only able to consume pap and faces difficulties in speaking.

The local authorities and Delta State government have been called upon by Patricia Unah to provide assistance for her husband’s medical treatment. The couple is facing financial hardships and struggles to afford the recommended medication.

Mr. Matthew Ujene, the Coordinator of the Delta State Livestock Management Committee, condemned the attack and assured that efforts are being made to address the situation and prevent further escalation. He noted that the cattle owners have committed to paying the hospital bill, and the police are actively seeking to apprehend the suspects involved.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident and stated that ongoing efforts are being made to apprehend the fleeing suspects involved in the attack.
