MURIC Urges Nigerian Army to Expose and Prosecute Coup Instigators Against President Tinubu

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has issued a fervent appeal to the Nigerian Army, urging it to reveal, apprehend, and bring to justice individuals who are attempting to incite the military to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government. This call follows the recent revelation by the army that certain factions have been actively encouraging it to stage a coup, using arguments such as soldiers’ welfare and citing the recent coup in Niger as justification.

In a statement released yesterday, MURIC applauded the Nigerian Army for standing steadfast against these subversive attempts. Professor Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director of MURIC, expressed the organization’s commendation and underscored the significance of maintaining democratic norms.

“We hereby commend the officers and men of the Nigerian Army for refusing to succumb to the instigation of coup zealots,” Akintola remarked.

He then proceeded to implore the military to uncover, apprehend, and initiate legal proceedings against those individuals who are pushing for the unlawful overthrow of the legitimate administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Akintola emphasized the crucial importance of upholding democracy and highlighted the perils associated with military rule. He cautioned Nigerians against the potential erosion of their freedoms, human dignity, and the rule of law under a military regime.

“Military rule will rob Nigerians of their freedom and dehumanize them. Every military regime is an imposition against the will of the people,” he warned.

Addressing the ramifications of military rule, Akintola noted that such regimes often lead to a lack of parliamentary representation, limited freedom of expression, and a lack of accountability. He pointed out, “There will be no senate or house of representatives under military rule. The army will not stomach criticism. Neither is there probity and accountability in a military regime.”

Strongly condemning the coup instigators, Akintola labeled them as ‘ignoramuses’ and ‘the greatest enemies of the Nigerian people.’ He reiterated the call for their identification, apprehension, and prosecution, comparing soldiers seeking political power to ‘gangsters’ intent on robbing innocent and hardworking citizens.

Akintola concluded by reaffirming MURIC’s staunch opposition to any efforts aimed at destabilizing Nigeria’s democracy. He reiterated the organization’s unwavering commitment to the rule of law and the protection of human rights.
