In a bid to inculcate hand-washing habit and proper hygiene in school children, the Rotary Club of Awka Urban, District 9142 and Rotary Club of Asaba Metropolitan, District 9141, have donated a hand washing bay to Sunbeam Primary and Secondary School, Nawfia, Njikoka Local Government Area.
The project was initiated with the aim of seeing that school children understand the importance of proper hygiene practice at cradle, beginning with hand washing.
Rotary International is a non-governmental organization that focuses on reaching out to humanity, and has its seven key projects in 2022/2023 Rotary Year to include disease prevention and treatment, basic education and literacy, community economic development, water, sanitation and hygiene, maternal and child care, as well as peace building and conflict prevention.
Commissioning the project, which is situated in the school’s premises, and will equally be of good use to worshippers of Saint Michael’s and All Angels Parish, Nawfia, the President, Rotary Club of Asaba Metropolitan, Rotarian Ifeoma Adejumo and the President, Rotary Club of Awka Urban, Rotarian Reverend Sister YvesMary Obi, said that the project is an inter-district scheme and described hand washing as a preventive measure against diseases such as diarrhoea and acute respiratory infections, adding that they put the washing bay in the school so that pupils will always have the opportunity to keep their hands clean, even as they urged the school management to take full ownership of the facility.
Contributing, the treasurer, Rotary Club of Awka Urban, Rotarian Osita Chiaghanam, said that parents, especially mothers, should inculcate proper hygiene practices in their children as part of efforts to ensure a healthy lifestyle and lesser diseases.
Welcoming the group, the Archdeacon, Nawfia Archdeaconry, Venerable Ifeanyi Umeh, commended Rotary International for its humanitarian activities in the society, and thanked God for making the project a reality and the Rotary clubs for being the instrument through which it was actualized.
Responding, the Principal and Headmistress of the school, Mr Ifeanyi Ogbuchimalu and Mrs Ogochukwu Chukwukezie, promised to make sure that their students make judicious use of the facility.
Also in attendance during the event were past Assistant Governor, Chinedu Osadebay, Rotarian Kingsley Okeke and Rotarian Nneka Ilochi among others.
The event climaxed with demonstrative hand washing by the group and students of the benefitting school.
