There has been an uneasy calm within the APGA family since the news emerged that Hon Nonso Smart Okafor, representing ndi Nnewi at the state House of Assembly and a governorship aspirant picked the nomination form to contest the June 23 APGA primaries.
When AIF Media broke the news at the second quarter of last year that Hon Nonso Smart had indicated interest to succeed gov Obiano, many doubted our report.
Yesterday, Hon Nonso Smart took the bold step and obtained the party’s nomination form at the cost of 22 million naira.
There is one important thing about this young man. He is a dodged fighter. He has always stand out in most of the struggles he embarked on.
At the level of Oko Polytechnic, Hon Nonso Smart emerged the President of the Students Union Government against all odds. He was not the choice of the School Management, but he was able to snatch the victory during the election. Despite the intimidation from the school management, Nonso outsmarted them and was elected the SUG President of Oko Polytechnic.
After his graduation, Smart again got involved in the politics of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN. In 2017, he indicated interest to run for the President of the NYCN, Anambra state chapter.
But his candidature was against the interest of Agu Awka. The cabal wanted a stooge and possibly an Aguleri man who will not oppose the 2017 return bid of gov Obiano.
Agu Awka produced one Valentine Okaa and released all govt machineries including fund. They were determined to impose him on the youths of Anambra. Intimidation and blackmail were equally deployed. On the day of the election at Awka, thugs invaded the venue to put fear on the youths who were on the side Nonso Smart but at the end of the election, the fearless Smart was declared winner.
The cabal felt embarrassed and went to another venue to pronounce Valentine Okaa, as a factional NYCN Anambra state chapter president. But that charade did not hold. All known institutions and agencies including Organisations and affiliate bodies recognized Smart and was dealing with him as the authentic President of NYCN Anambra state.
After his successful tenure as NYCN president, Nonso Smart joined the race for Anambra state House of Assembly contest in 2019.
How he picked the ticket of APGA and became the candidate of the party at the primaries is a story for another day. On March 9, 2019 many were shocked when INEC declared Nonso Smart as winner of the Nnewi north House of Assembly election.
Again, Hon Nonso Smart has entered another struggle. He is now an Aspirant of APGA having obtained the party’s nomination and expression of interest forms. He will stand against Prof Soludo and 7 others on June 23 APGA primaries for November 6 governorship election.
He has a record of emerging victorious against all odds. He is a true comrade who knows how to relate with his people. He is an emerging political general.
He has quietly toured all the 21 local govt areas and met one-on-one with APGA delegates, leaders and critical stakeholders.
