Obasanjo leads West African Elders’ Forum pre-election fact-finding mission to Sierra Leone

Former Nigerian president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, will lead a team of the West African Elders’ Forum (WAEF) on a pre-election fact-finding mission to Sierra Leone. The mission, which is scheduled for two days, will take place ahead of the country’s general elections set for June 2023.

Other members of the team include former Nigerian president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, and former Vice President of The Gambia, Fatoumata Tambajang. The objective of the mission is to interact with major political leaders and other key stakeholders in Sierra Leone to increase citizens’ trust and confidence in the electoral process.

The Communications Officer of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, Wealth Dickson Ominabo, revealed in a statement that the mission is intended to support peaceful and inclusive general elections. The team will hold consultations with the country’s political actors and stakeholders, including civil society, diplomatic corps, and electoral management bodies and agencies, to determine the level of readiness for conducting free, fair, and credible elections.
