Pastor Arrested for Allegedly Setting 21-Year-Old Lady Ablaze During Deliverance

A shocking incident unfolded in Offin, Sagamu area of Ogun State, as a 21-year-old woman, Sukura Owodunni, was reportedly set ablaze during a deliverance session by Pastor Taiwo Odebiyi of the Cherubim and Seraphim Maberu Parish. The incident occurred on August 17, 2023, when the victim visited the church for a special prayer at the pastor’s invitation.

According to reports from PUNCH Metro, Pastor Odebiyi instructed Owodunni to procure Amazing Grace perfume, local eggs, and a candle for the prayer session. While performing the deliverance, the pastor is said to have poured the perfume on her body and ignited the candle. The flames engulfed Owodunni, resulting in severe burns to her chest, shoulder, and legs.

Local eyewitnesses recounted the incident and mentioned that the Divisional Police Officer in Adigbe, CSP Abdulfattah Ogunsanya, promptly arrested the pastor following their arrival at the scene on Tuesday.

Ogun State’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding the case. The victim, who reportedly bore the brunt of medical expenses alone, is currently receiving medical care at a hospital. The suspect remains in custody, and after preliminary investigations, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department.

As investigations proceed, the community is left shocked by the tragic incident and awaits further details to emerge.
