Reject five-day sit-at-home threat, Ohanaeze, IPOB to Igbo

Date:

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) yesterday urged Southeast residents to reject the five-day sit-at-home declared by a faction of IPOB.

They vowed to resist any attempt to subject the people to more hardship.

President General of Ohanaeze, Prof. George Obiozor, called on Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi, the Senator representing Ebonyi North, Sam Egwu and Ebonyi elders to rein in on the breakaway IPOB leader, Simon Ekpa, who hails from the state.

The organisation asked Ekpa to stop threatening the people with a reckless sit-at-home directive.

Ekpa, a Finland-based self-acclaimed disciple of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, had in a viral clip asked residents to stay home for five days.

He said: “In preparation to stop the election from taking place in Biafraland, there should be a chain of sit-at-home on Friday, December 9; Saturday, December 10; Sunday, December 11; Monday, December 12; and Wednesday, December 14, 2022.

“Tuesday December 13, 2022, is set aside for market and all these are in preparation for the exit of Biafra from Nigeria.”

There were concerns in some quarters that the illegal directive could hurt sources of livelihood ahead of the Yuletide.

In Ebonyi, parents asked schools to release their children for fear of “unknown gunmen”.

Obiozor, in a statement by Ohanaeze spokesman, Alex Ogbonnia, also called on the traditional ruler of the Umueziaka community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi, where Ekpa hails from, to remind Ekpa that he is hunting his own people in the name of fighting for freedom.

Ohanaeze expressed worry that the latter-day Biafran agitators, in their delusion, constitute a monumental problem for the Igbo.

The statement reads: “They (the governor and other leaders/elders) should remind Ekpa that the world has never recorded a freedom fighter that faces the barrel of the gun inwards.

“Elementary logic questions the rationale for a young man to wake up and begin to suffocate the very people he claims to protect.

“When the Igbo are undergoing excruciating hardship arising from orchestrated injustice, a young man or rather a self-styled hero will be busy crippling the Igbo economy thereby adding salt to injury.”
