Rise in Drug Abuse: NGO takes “shun” drug abuse campaign to secondary schools in Ebonyi state

The involvement of our youth in consuming illicit drugs is on the increase amongst our youth. As the problem of drug abuse continue to persists, a faith based Non-governmental organization, Anglican Diocese of Abakaliki Health and Community Development initiative, ADOHACDI, has taken a campaign to sensitize our youth on the need to shun hard drugs and addictions to some of the selected schools in the three senatorial districts of Ebonyi state.

The Coordinator of the project who also doubles as the leader of the team, Rev. Umeokafor Chukwunenye, disclosed that the sensitization campaign was part of the ADOHACDI’s efforts in focusing on streets, schools and religious organizations, spreading facts on the misuse of drugs. He opined further that, in our fight against misuse of drugs, all hands must be on deck. It’s not enough telling people about the dangers inherent in drug abuse, but to encourage everyone to get involved in this fight.

“The involvement of our youth in consuming illicit drugs has fuelled plethora of criminalities in Ebonyi state. We want to invest absolute dedication to see to the eradication of this subtle pandemic that’s afflicting our youth and save lives,” he promised.

He elucidated further that Anti Drug club will be formed in some of the schools across the senatorial districts of Ebonyi state. Some of the students will be mentored and in turn train their contemporaries on the knowledge they have acquired to aid them in staying free from misuse of drugs and addictions.

Also addressing the students,Mr. Falade Fortune, a Legal practitioner, enlightened the students on career choice and further exposed the students to the damages that drug addictions is capable of constituting to their aspirations. He advised them to shun illicit drugs so that their dreams will not be quashed.

Other speakers including, Miss.Macaulay Orevaoghene , a medical personnel, lectured the students on the effect of drug abuse to the users. According to her,hard drugs affects the users healthwise both physically, mentally and socially.

 “Mentally in the sense that the user can become unsound in mind either partially or totality.

“Physically, the effect on the body is very visible, they are always weak and highly susceptible to ailments .

Socially they find it hard to establish a relationship with people that are not drug abusers like them, leading to increasing likelihood of depression,” she explained.

Mr Bankole Emmanuel, a trained public administrator opined that, if the youth are positively empowered, the thought of engaging in drug abuse will be distant from them. He counselled the students to shun drug abuse and flee from bad company.

 

One of the Principals of the school visited , Mrs. Ukamaka Nwali Veronica of Community secondary school abomege,  showered encomiums on the ADOHACDI team. She expressed her maximum satisfaction with the level of engagement exhibited with the students. She pleaded with the teachers to show untiring effort in lecturing their students on the ills associated with misuse of drugs.
