“To the glory of God; as part of my efforts to bridge the information and communications technological gap in Anambra South, today being Tuesday, July 7, 2020, I sponsored a bill to establish an Institute of Information and Communication Technology in Uga, Aguata, Anambra State.
The Institute of Information and Communication Technology, Uga, Aguata will be saddled with the task of training and equipping Nigerians with marketable ICT skills that can increase their employability, life opportunities and promote indigenous capacity for innovation, research and wealth creation.
The primary aim of this bill is to rapidly accelerate the development of the southeast and Nigeria at large using technology as a tool to create employment and provide the qualitative workforce needed for ICT development in Nigeria.
Upon establishment, the Institute will offer various relevant courses including Web programming,Software development, Cybersecurity, Robotic embedded systems, Computer forensics, Digital media and Entertainment technology, etc. The array of courses offered by the institute will be strategic and would avail my constituents the opportunity to acquire ICT based knowledge that provides necessary skills for gainful employment and job creation. The Bill if passed into law will empower the Institute to award National Diploma and Higher National Diploma.
Conclusively, it is my ardent belief that for our country to achieve a significant leap in its ICT revolution, there is need to stimulate economic growth and sustainable job creation by establishing an institute of Information and Communication Technology which will provide training that will in turn, bolster innovation amongst Nigerians to proffer innovative tech solutions to problems in the society. It is therefore my expectation that having passed the first reading, the bill will be read the second time and recommended to the relevant committee for further legislative action.
2. Furthermore, today, I also came under Order 43 of the Senate Rules to move an important motion alerting the leadership of the Senate of the excruciating pains and extortion suffered by the South East Market Traders Association(SEAMATA) in the hands of PIL Shipping company entrusted with the task of delivering Southeast importers/SEAMATA’s containers from China to ports in Nigeria. Subsequently, I was given express approval to present this motion comprehensively on the floor of the Senate in the next plenary session.”
