Senator Ubah’s bill for the establishment of federal medical centre Uli, passes 1st reading

In line with Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s vision to consolidate the health concerns in his senatorial zone Anambra South, yesterday being Wednesday, July 22, 2020, he sponsored a bill for the establishment of Federal Medical Center(FMC) Uli, Anambra State(SB. 487) on the floor of the Senate.

Senator Ubah said undoubtedly, healthcare is a critical matter in every society as it plays a crucial role in the overall well being and survival of the people. Presently, Anambra State is the second largest commercial city in Nigeria after Lagos in Onitsha and hosts the largest auto parts market(Nkwo Nnewi) in West Africa. The population is overwhelming as Anambra hosts a large number of visitors from across the globe based on the high level of commercial and industrial activities going on in the state.

Currently, there is only one Federal Tertiary Health institution in Anambra state; Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital(NAUTH) which is grossly inadequate to cater for the health needs of the people. This brings to bear, the urgent need for a Federal Medical Center(FMC) Uli to complement Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital(NAUTH) and provide adequate healthcare for the growing population of the state, he added.

The Anambra South Senator said upon establishment, Anambra will join the list of Southeastern states with a Federal Medical Center such as FMC Imo, FMC Abia and Enugu which boasts of three Federal Health institutions, namely; The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital- Enugu and National Orthopedic Hospital, Enugu.

He further notes that the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Uli is not only a necessity but an urgent and imperative factor that will strengthen accessible and effective healthcare delivery in Anambra State. The Federal Medical Center will be fully equipped, maintained and operational to provide medical services for diagnosis, curative and rehabilitative medical treatment.

“Conclusively, it is my ardent belief that adequate healthcare is an important factor for human capital development which has been demonstrated to be the basis of economic productivity. By the grace of God, upon commencement of Senate recess next week, I will be visiting my constituency to have a tour of some health installations that I have been part of through the Anambra Progressives Forum to monitor the ongoing projects which are part of my contributions to healthcare development in Anambra State. It is therefore my expectation that having passed the first reading, the bill will be read the second time and recommended to the relevant committee for further legislative action.” Ubah concluded.
