The Super Falcons are in jubilant spirits following an impressive display that led to a stunning 3-2 defeat of co-hosts Australia in their second group game at the ongoing Women’s World Cup.
As the 9-time African champions emerged victorious over the 10th world-ranked team, Australia, they now lead Group B on superior goal difference, amassing four points from two games.
A delightful video shared on the Super Falcons’ official Twitter handle captured the team’s euphoria, with players like Asisat Oshoala, Francessa Ordega, Oluwatosin Blessing Demehin, Uchenna Kanu, Chiamaka Nnadozie, and others seen dancing and vibing to the hit single ‘Lonely at the Top’ by superstar singer Asake.
Notably, Asisat Oshoala, who scored the winning goal, etched her name in history as the first Nigerian and the first female African player to score in three different editions of the FIFA World Cup. Her goals were against Sweden on 8th June 2015, South Korea on 12th June 2019, and Australia on 27th July 2023.
Oshoala’s decisive goal in the 72nd minute, shortly after coming on as a substitute, crowned a stellar performance by the Nigerian team.
This victory significantly boosts their chances of advancing to the second round, as goals from Asisat Oshoala, Uchenna Kanu, and Osinachi Ohale secured the Falcons’ maximum points against the co-hosts.
Looking ahead, Nigeria will aim to seal their place in the next round when they face the already-eliminated Republic of Ireland on Monday, requiring only a draw to progress.
The celebration didn’t stop with the players, as defender Ashleigh Plumptre was also spotted joyfully dancing to the hit song ‘Ade Ori Okin’ by Wasiu Ayinde.
As the Super Falcons continue to make waves in the Women’s World Cup, fans and supporters alike are elated, and the team’s performance is sure to be remembered as one of their finest moments in international football.
