COMMUNIQUÉ:
The Southern Peoples Congress (Spc) Calls On The Rivers State Govt., To Come To The Aid Of Queenstown, Opobo – Hon George Wilson (SPC – President)
THE QUEENSTOWN SHORELINES PROTECTION, JETTY CONSTRUCTION AND THE RESTORATION PROJECT THAT WAS COMMISSIONED IN 2011, HAS BEEN ABANDONED!
SUNDAY 05/09/21
9:20AM
Queenstown, one of the numerous Island towns in the Opobo/Nkuro local government area in Rivers State, a famous town where over 500,000 people proudly call their home, a unique and ancient town and its people preoccupation are predominantly fishing and trading.
A Town well known for her rich cultural heritage that attracts thousands of people all over the world every end of the year to gather together to celebrate its long standing cultural feister.
The town is constantly being threatened heavily by the ocean of its water front, due to its proximity of the unforgiving Atlantic tides and waves.
Everyday, every hour, and every second, Queenstown and its people are under the threat’s of the erosion.
The shorelines of the town is being eating off deeply to the little land space available, thereby making the community to go into extension, making them live below the sea level and in no distance time, for any single erosion the entire town will be wiped off.
The only and nearest neighbor around the town is the Atlantic ocean, which its tides and waves are worse and very frightening.
In 1987, the Federal Government, severally attempted to carry out work on the erosion by constructing a shorelines erosion control system around the coastal areas but prove abortive, as the water front obviously surrender in a constant hammering of the tides and waves.
This situation have started to expose the community of the uncertainty of its survivals, they live in fears and hopes for something drastic to be done to save the town from the mercies of the wild Atlantic ocean.
In 2011, the State Government led by former Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, contracted the project for the Redemption, protection and restoration of Queenstown shorelines and jetty reconstruction to one DICESON ASSOCIATED LTD., to carry out works on the site immediately, and over 75% advancement was given to facilitate the contractors.
Over 10years now, nothing what so ever has been done to the project, not even a single job was carried out, the contract, another ghost and untraceable identity, with address inexistence.
The entire community and its people that have contributed so much to the development of the Rivers State, its region and Nigeria at large and now they are about to be left alone to be drown away as an entity.
Hon. George Wilson, the President of SPC is appealing to the state government to urgently come to our rescue now, it is very painful and pathetic to watch your community being washes away.
We are calling on the Governor Wike led administration to swiftly come to our rescue, hence governance is continuous.
The Governor should use his good office to make yet another historic achievement in bringing smiles back to the people of Queenstown.
The Governor Wike aka Mr. Project, administration has completed a lot of projects in some rural communities in the state, we cannot be left out of his continues mouth watery projects in other communities.
Ones again we appeal to the government of Rivers State to turn its satellite’s towards the direction of the people that are crying for help and better life for their community, the time is now for the project to be revisited according.
Signed:
Hon. George Wilson.
President.
