When we criticised this Awka flyover, it was not because we don’t like gov Obiano or because we want his administration to fail, it was because the flyovers were poorly constructed and most importantly, they were designed and executed purely for media hype.
In one of our publications here, we made it clear that such flyovers can not exist on a Truck-A road.
Enugu-Awka-Onitsha express road is a Truck-A road. It is a super high way. Every vehicle that has no stop-over business at Awka has no business using the service lane.
Vehicles, including long trucks heading to Enugu or Onitsha on either side of the dual carriage way ought to use the flyover. If the flyover was standard and not to make noise on media, the accident today won’t have occured.
At Nkpor flyover Onitsha constructed by Mr Peter Obi, all long trucks and heavy duty vehicles ply the flyover. But at Awka, the flyovers were poorly constructed and this led to using barricades on them.
The barricades forced long trucks and heavy duty vehicles to take the service lane. This causes gridlocks and avoidable accidents like the tragedy of today.
It is unfortunate but there are likelihood of demolishing those flyovers in future.
They were not designed to stand the test of legacy or signature projects. They were designed for accolades, media hype and politics.
The truck carrying cows which lost control and rammed into vehicles queuing at Akwata junction had no business on that service lane if the flyover is strong and not substandard.
We sympathize with the victims and call on FG to demolish those flyovers and reconstruct them to avoid these tragedies.
