Tragedy Strikes: Mother and Toddler Crushed to Death by Runaway Bus in Ikotun, Lagos

A horrifying incident unfolded in the Ikotun region of Lagos on Thursday, resulting in the tragic demise of an unidentified woman and her two-year-old daughter. The heart-wrenching incident occurred when a bus careened into a row of shops along the roadside, opposite Toluwalase Hall on Governor’s Road in Ikotun.

Eyewitnesses recounted the horrifying scene, with one individual, identified as Tayo, sharing his account of the calamity. According to Tayo, the bus, which appeared to be a Hummer Bus, potentially lost control of its brakes, leading it to plow through several shops. The devastating impact claimed the lives of the woman and her young daughter, who were rushed to a nearby hospital but sadly declared deceased.

In a gut-wrenching twist, it was revealed that the woman had valiantly attempted to shield her child from harm. Witnesses reported that as the bus bore down on them, she made a desperate attempt to rescue her daughter, tragically losing her own life in the process. The bus driver, realizing the gravity of the situation, fled the scene, narrowly escaping the ire of enraged passersby who had congregated at the site of the accident.

Our correspondents, who arrived at the scene, were met with a chilling sight – the bus lodged precariously beside a roadside gutter, spanning its width. The image stood as a haunting testament to the sheer force of the collision.

Divisional Police Officer at Ikotun, Adagba Johnson, confirmed the harrowing incident, revealing that law enforcement personnel were already on the scene attending to the situation. He affirmed, “I’m aware, our men are there.”

Reports indicated that the police swiftly launched a pursuit of the fleeing bus driver, and a police van was observed speeding past the accident site, possibly carrying the apprehended driver.

Babatunde Farinloye, the Lagos Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, lent further confirmation to the incident, acknowledging the presence of his officers at the scene. He asserted, “My men are there, they are aware, I will give more details.”
