Umahi Swears In Justice Elvis Ngene As New Chief Judge; Onyekachi Nwebonyi As Commissioner

The new Chief Judge of Ebonyi State, Justice Elvis Ngene has been sworn in.

The event took place at the Christian Ecumenical Center, Abakaliki on Wednesday, March 29, 2021.

Also sworn in is the former Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP in the State, Chief Onyekachi Nwebonyi as the Commissioner for Capital City Development.

The swearing in ceremony took place at the Christian Ecumenical Centre Abakaliki on Monday.

Speaking, Governor David Nweze Umahi congratulated the new Chief Judge for scaling the hurdle of the scrutiny of the National Judicial Council to emerge the fifth Chief Judge of the State.

While commending the previous two Chief Judges for working hard to stabilize the third arm of Government, Governor Umahi charged the new Chief Judge to ensure quick dispensation of justice in the State.

“We will encourage you to always liaise with the former Chief Judges of the State so that you will have smooth sail, my prayer is that you will finish well, you will finish strong. Government does not interfere with the affairs of the Judiciary but Government must always insist that you dispense justice as it should be, so far our Judiciary remains one of the best”

Governor Umahi assured of his Administration’s commitment to support the new CJ to take the Judiciary to the next level.

He commended the new Commissioner Onyekachi Nwebonyi for his enormous contributions to governance describing him as a dependable asset to the State.

Before the swearing in ceremony, the Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Chief Cletus Ofoke said the appointment of the new CJ which was done pursuant to the provision of the 1999 Constitution of the Country met all legal provisions.

He said going by the Jurist’s immense contributions in the legal sector of the Nation, he was rest assured that he would deliver on his Mandate.

” Your Excellency, it was pursuant to section 271 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended that Honourable Justice EA Ngene was appointed the Chief Judge of Ebonyi State. Justice Elvis Ngene is a seasoned jurist who has contributed immensely to the Development of Ebonyi State Judiciary and Nigeria in general”

Chief Ofoke also congratulated Commissioner Onyekachi Nwebonyi for his new work schedule and wished him well in his continued Service to the State.

Responding, the new Chief Judge, Justice Elvis Ngene thanked the National Judicial Council and the Ebonyi State Government for finding him worthy of Service and pledged to do his best to ensure that the Judiciary continues to function as the bastion of hope to the common man.

“By the grace of God, I will not betray this trust, this is a call to serve and I pledge to serve with all my commitments, we shall synergize with all agencies and organs of Government to ensure that we build the Judiciary of our dream to continue to function as the bastion of hope to the common man”

The Commissioner, Chief Onyekachi Nwebonyi thanked the Governor for the recognition and pledged to justify the confidence entrusted in him through the appointment.

” I want to reaffirm my total commitment towards serving you and your Government, as the Commissioner in-charge of the Capital City, I am ready to contribute my quota towards taking Ebonyi State to the desired next level”

It would be recalled that Chief Onyekachi Nwebonyi who was the authentic Chairman of PDP in the State had on Saturday 27th March 2021 in company of all the State Working Committee Members and his over 10,000 supporters decamped to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
