USAID Donates $3.3 Million in ‘New Tools’ to Nigeria’s National Tuberculosis Program

Reports say, Nigeria reported one hundred and thirty eight thousand, six hundred Tuberculosis patients in 2020, which is a fifteen percent increase from the one hundred and twenty thousand, two hundred and sixty six reported in 2019.

On this backdrop, the U.S. Agency for International Development, USAID, has donated three point three million dollars in commodities to the Nigeria Federal Ministry of Health’s National TB and Leprosy Control Program, NTBLCP, as part of a broader New Tools Project-Nigeria to help NTBLCP officials find more missing TB cases so as to assist the country sustain an upward trajectory for TB case-finding in line with global targets.

USAID Mission Director Anne Patterson, said, they are committed to working closely with the Government of Nigeria in expanding early detection and reducing the number of TB cases in the country and the tools will make TB primary care more accessible to many Nigerians and save lives.

She counted some of the donated items to include thirty eight Trunat” machines for molecular tests to diagnose TB and drug-resistant TB with eighty thousand testing reagents and ten high-tech portable digital x-ray systems with computer-aided detection software for use in hard-to-reach areas as well as enough medicines to prevent TB progression in twenty one thousand patients.

According to her, in the next year, the new tools promise to provide state of the art screening for five hundred thousand persons, rapid molecular testing for about eighty thousand persons, and ultimately diagnose ten thousand cases for treatment referral and the new tools will be implemented in eighteen states in the country through the USAID Tuberculosis Local Organizations Network (TB LON) activity.

Nigeria is one of seven countries receiving the package of screening, diagnostic, and treatment tools alongside other countries like Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Kenya, Philippines, and Vietnam
